Advantages.

The Nikon 85mm 1.8G is a very good prime lens for a portrait – Landscape – still life and long-exposure photography in my opinion.

This lens is well balanced for low contrast flare on maximum aperture f/1.8.

Focal length FX vs DX

The 85mm focal length has long been considered good for a portrait on full-frame / FX camera

85mm becomes equivalent to the perception of the naked eye in my opinion.

On a cropped-sensor camera / DX-camera, the 85mm becomes equivalent to 127mm on FX camera.

Portrait.

85mm focal length is usually my choice for portrait, close up head-shots photography, I like to use 50mm focal length for full portrait and three-quarter Length portrait.

I usually do not use this lens other than for portrait photography, Sometimes I have used this lens for long exposure and landscape photography.

Bokeh test/Sharpness.

I did a bokeh comparison between Nikon 50mm 1.8G vs Nikon 85mm 1.8G wide open and the Nikon 85mm render much more bokeh effect, to reach the same bokeh as the Nikon 50mm@ f/1.8 – you will need to stop the Nikon 85mm lens down to f/3.5 – then the bokeh will look the same as Nikon 50mm 1.8 @ f/1.8. shoot from the same distance.

long-exposure.

I always like to test the strength of my lenses in long-exposure photography, I can see so much of the lens strength or weakness in just a few shots, the Nikon 85mm 1.8G is GOOD.

Nikon D810 AF-S 85mm 1:1.8G @ f/8.0 - 30 sec ISO 100
Nikon D810 – Nikkor AF-S 85mm 1.8G @ f/8.0 – ISO 100 – 30 sec
Nikon D810 AF-S 85mm 1:1.8G @ f/4.0 - 5.0 sec ISO 200
Nikon D810 – Nikkor AF-S 85mm 1.8G @ f/4.0 – ISO 200 – 5.0 sec

Disadvantages in my opinion.

The only disadvantages, in my opinion, is focus distance, this lens has Minimum focus distance of 80 cm/2.62 ft, too many times have I find myself in the situation wanted closer shoots, so I wish this lens could focus closer than this.
