Nikon 18-105mm AF-S DX Lens Review.

I have probably shot over 60.000 pictures with this lens for past 7 years, I have shoot four weddings and many events and party’s, this was my basic lens when I was learning to become professional photographer, how versatile this lens is the best thing about it, picture quality is okay, occasionally I still use this lens for events and party, this is a good all round lens, but nothing like prime lens, if you have only this lens, it’s a good start, but I recommend getting 50mm prime lens next.

Disadvantages.

This is not the best lens for a low light situation.

Bokeh.

To get the most bokeh effect with this lens, if you zoom to 105mm and have your subject close to you, you should be able to a chew a decent bokeh effect.

Sharpness.

Best sharpness is on 18mm using the lens at f/5.6 to f/8.

Lens Flare.

This lens has High-performance optical system featuring an ED glass element and an aspherical lens element realizes superior image reproduction capability, this lens does not flare much so its good for shooting with the sun in front of you.

Portrait photography.

I recommend to those who are using this lens for portrait photography to learn off camera Speed-light photography.

I have used this lens for studio portrait session many times, the lens did not play the biggest role there, it was the studio lights that was the biggest part of that studio sessions, for me as a beginner it was okay, everybody needs to start somewhere.

The biggest reason I’m still using this lens is for this technique called Nightclub light trails photography, here I’m using slow camera shutter speed to create motion blur.

For this technique, I like to use the normal zoom lens with VR and I-TTL Flash.

Conclusion and recommendation.

Good all round lens with VR, good for travel photography and video shooting for beginners.

This is a good lens to start with, I recommend to those who are using this lens for portrait photography to learn to use off camera Speed-light photography, then this lens can do wonders.
